If you are coming to Lombok to surf and it is your first time then
there are a number of options available as for surf spots for all levels
of skill - from complete beginner (Grupuk Inside), to improver, and of
course some of the most difficult waves in the world with shallow reef
and hollow barrel rides (Dester Point).
Generally there are 2 options available as for boat trips; motorbike and local boat, or fastboat rental. Lets give an overview of the pros and cons of each:
1. Motorbike and Local Boats
Generally, until recently this was the only option. If you are living in Kuta (which is the main central area for surfing in the south coast) then generally you would ride anywhere from 5-10km (Segar Reef and Grupuk), to 30-50km (Air Guling, Mawi, Ekas.. don't get me started on Ekas)
Then when you get to the bay / beach, more often than not the break is a reef beak and not always just a paddle in from the sand. You then need to rent a local surfer / fisherman with a small wooden boat and engine to take you out to the break - for another 10-30 minutes.
Generally this is the norm, its even quite fun and it can be an adventure. But there can be problems and sometimes half your time is spent traveling and any number of misfortunes can occur (flat tires, stuck behind wedding processions, dangerous roads, potholes, crashes, getting lost, and generally being a bit tired or hungry before you even get in the water).. Then there is the matter of boat safety.. there actually aren't many horror stories (but there are some), but generally the boats are small, wooden boats, with a small engine and are not built for big swell (and never have any safety equipment).
2. Fastboat Rental
So, the other option is fastboat rental.
You don't have to do a whole surfcamp to get a reliable boat, a local guide and to surf waves which aren't so crowded. It is possible to charter your own speedboat which can fit 10 people, has a more powerful engine as well as a backup engine and safety equipment.
It comes with an experienced captain who drives the boat for you and makes sure you are safe, as well as a local surf guide to show you the spots and give recommendations (if you need one), and of course can give you lessons if you need these too.
The main advantage of a private charter speedboat rental is in the time you save - typically you leave from Kuta beach and travel to any surf spot in less than half of the time than with motorbike + local boat. You will also be a bit comfier, and a LOT safer.
It is definitely a good option if you have a few friends and want to spend more time in the water and less time on the back of a motorbike.
